4. Collection and Use of Non-Personal Information
We also collect data that, by itself, cannot be directly associated with any specific individual. We may collect, use, transfer, and disclose non-personal information for any purpose. Below are some examples of non-personal information we may collect and how we might use it.
We may collect information such as occupation, language, zip code, area code, unique device identifier, referrer URL, location, and the time zone where a PBS product is used, so that we can better understand customer behavior and improve our products, services, and advertising.
We collect information about customer activities on our website and from our other products and services. We aggregate this information to help provide more useful information to our customers and to understand which parts of our website, products, and services are of most interest. For the purposes of this Privacy Policy, aggregated data is considered non-personal information.
We may collect and store details of how you use our services, including search queries. This information may be used to improve the relevance of the results provided by our services. Except in the few cases where we need to ensure the quality of services delivered over the Internet, such information will not be associated with your IP address.
If we combine non-personal information with personal information, the combined information will be treated as personal information for as long as it remains combined.
5. Use of Cookies and Other Technologies
PBS's websites, online services, interactive applications, email messages, and advertisements may use "Cookies" and other technologies such as pixel tags and web beacons. These technologies help us better understand user behavior, tell us which parts of our websites people have visited, and facilitate and measure the effectiveness of advertisements and web searches. We treat information collected by Cookies and other technologies as non-personal information. However, to the extent that Internet Protocol (IP) addresses or similar identifiers are considered personal information by local law, we also treat these identifiers as personal information. Similarly, to the extent that non-personal information is combined with personal information, we treat the combined information as personal information for the purposes of this Privacy Policy.
PBS and its partners use Cookies and other technologies in mobile advertising services to control the number of times you see a given ad, deliver ads that might be relevant to you, and measure the effectiveness of ad campaigns. If you do not want to receive ads tailored to your interests from PBS on your mobile device, you can choose to opt-out by visiting the following link on your device. If you choose to opt-out, you will continue to receive the same number of mobile ads, but they may be less relevant because they will not be based on your interests. You will still see ads related to the content on a web page or in an app or based on other non-personal information. The opt-out applies only to PBS advertising services and will not affect interest-based ads from other advertising networks. However, if you opt out of interest-based ads on your mobile device, third-party apps will not be permitted by contract to use the "Advertising Identifier" (a non-personal device identifier) to serve you targeted ads.
PBS and our partners also use Cookies and other technologies to remember personal information when you use our website, online services, and applications. Our goal in these cases is to make your experience with PBS more convenient and personal. For example, knowing your name allows us to welcome you the next time you visit the PBS Online Store. Knowing your country and language - and if you are an educator, your school - helps us provide a more useful and customized shopping experience. Knowing someone using your computer or device has purchased a particular product or used a particular service helps us make our advertising and email communications more relevant to your interests. And knowing your contact information, hardware identifiers, and information about your computer or device helps us provide you with better customer service, register your operating system, and set up your service.
If you want to disable cookies and are using a web browser, go to your preferences and then to the privacy pane to disable cookies. On your mobile device, go to Settings, then Privacy, and then to the Cookies section. For other browsers, check with your provider to find out how to disable cookies. Please note that certain features of the PBS website will not be available once cookies are disabled.
Like most internet services, we automatically collect some information and store it in log files. This information includes Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, browser type and language, Internet service provider (ISP), referring and exit pages and applications, operating system, date/time stamp, and clickstream data.
We use this information to understand and analyze trends, to administer the site, to learn about user behavior on the site, to improve our products and services, and to gather demographic information about our user base as a whole. PBS may use this information in our marketing and advertising services.
In some of our email messages, we use a "click-through URL" linked to content on the PBS website. When customers click one of these URLs, they pass through a separate web server before arriving at the destination page on our website. We track this click-through data to help us determine interest in particular topics and measure the effectiveness of our customer communications. If you prefer not to be tracked in this way, you should not click text or graphic links in the email messages.
Pixel tags enable us to send email messages in a format customers can read, and they tell us whether mail has been opened. We may use this information to reduce or eliminate messages sent to customers.
6. Protection of Personal Information
PBS takes the security of your personal information very seriously and takes all reasonably feasible measures to protect your personal information:
(1) Data Security Technical Measures
We adopt security protection measures that comply with industry standards, including establishing reasonable systems and norms and using security technologies to prevent unauthorized access, use, alteration, damage, or loss of your personal information.
PBS's network services adopt encryption technologies such as Transport Layer Security protocol and provide browsing services through HTTPS to ensure the security of user data during transmission.
PBS uses encryption technology to encrypt and save users' personal information and uses isolation technology for isolation.
When using personal information, such as for displaying personal information or performing personal information-related calculations, we use various data desensitization technologies including content replacement and SHA256 to enhance the security of personal information in use.
PBS employs strict data access permission controls and multi-factor authentication technology to protect personal information and prevent data from being used improperly.
PBS uses code security automatic inspection and data access log analysis technology for personal information security audits.
PBS online services use encryption technologies such as Transport Layer Security (TLS) to protect your personal information during transmission. When PBS stores your personal data, we use computer systems with limited access housed in facilities using physical security measures.
iCloud data is stored in encrypted form, including when we use third-party storage. You are responsible for the personal information you choose to share or submit in the above situations. For instance, if you post your name and email address in a forum, that information is public. Please take care when using these features.
If you or anyone else on your Family Sharing plan signs in to a device owned by a third party, any information (including calendars, locations, photos, and iTunes purchases) shared within your "family" group may be downloaded onto that third-party device thereby disclosing any such shared information.
(2) Security Incident Response
In the event of a personal information security incident such as leakage, damage, or loss, PBS has established multiple policies defining classification and grading standards for security incidents and vulnerabilities and corresponding handling procedures. PBS has also established a dedicated emergency response team for security incidents. Following security incident handling specifications, different security plans are activated based on the type of security incident to stop losses, conduct analysis, locate the cause, formulate remedial measures, and trace and combat the source in conjunction with relevant departments.
In the unfortunate event of a personal information security incident, we will promptly notify you as required by laws and regulations, informing you of: the basic situation and potential impact of the security incident; measures we have taken or will take; suggestions for you to prevent and mitigate risks independently; and remedies for you. We will also inform you of the incident-related situation promptly via email, letter, phone, push notification, etc. When it is difficult to inform each individual information subject, we will issue announcements in a reasonable and effective manner. Simultaneously, we will proactively report the handling of personal information security incidents to regulatory authorities as required.
If you have any questions regarding our protection of personal information, you can contact us using the contact methods specified in this Privacy Policy. If you discover that your personal information has been compromised, especially your account and password, please contact us immediately using the contact methods specified in this Privacy Policy so that we can take appropriate measures.
7. Integrity and Retention of Personal Information
PBS provides some convenient ways for you to ensure that your personal information is accurate, complete, and up to date. We will retain your personal information for the period necessary to fulfill the purposes outlined in this Privacy Policy unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law.
Your personal information will be stored within the territory of the People's Republic of China. If you use cross-border transaction services and need to transfer your personal information overseas to complete the transaction, we will separately obtain your authorization and consent and require the recipient to handle such personal information in accordance with our instructions, this Privacy Policy, and any other relevant confidentiality and security measures.
8. Managing Your Personal Information
(1) Access and Correction
Except as stipulated by laws and regulations, you have the right to access and correct your account personal information at any time, helping us ensure your contact information and preferences are accurate, complete, and up-to-date. For other personal information we hold, we will provide you with access for any purpose, including requesting that we correct the data if it is inaccurate or delete it if PBS is not required to retain it by law or for legitimate business purposes. You can also withdraw all authorizations for us to continue collecting your personal information by deactivating your account.
Please understand that each business function requires some basic personal information to be completed. After you withdraw your consent or authorization, we will no longer be able to provide you with the services corresponding to the withdrawn consent or authorization, nor will we continue processing the corresponding personal information. However, your decision to withdraw consent or authorization will not affect the previous processing of personal information based on your authorization.
(4) Responding to Your Requests
If you are unable to access, correct, or delete your personal information through the above means, or if you need to access, correct, or delete other personal information generated during your use of our products and/or services, or if you believe PBS has violated any laws and regulations or agreements regarding the collection or use of personal information, you can contact us. We may decline requests that are unreasonably repetitive, require disproportionate technical effort (for example, developing a new system or fundamentally changing an existing practice), risk the privacy of others, or would be extremely impractical (for instance, requests concerning information residing on backup tapes).
Under the following circumstances, we will be unable to respond to your request as required by laws and regulations:
